People often ask;
- Does a Person-Centred therapist just sit there and does nothing?
- What will I talk about?
- If my problem needs a quick solution will a Person-Centred therapist help?
A Person-Centred therapist does not just sit there and do nothing. This is a misconception, the therapist is listening to you and really listening to what you are saying and what you are not saying. This ‘doing nothing’ that appears to be the case is the therapist allowing you all the space you need to explore your issues. You are able to really hear yourself and over time you will unlock the resources that you already have in you to help you reach a solution to your issues. You are the EXPERT on your life.
In a Person-Centred relationship, what you talk about is entirely up to you. As the expert on your life, it is only you that can bring issues in the space to explore. The therapist is there to facilitate an environment that is safe, confidential and non-judgemental to allow you to really delve into your situation and explore any issues that are making you feel stuck.
Person-Centred therapy is not suitable for all situations. Some issues require solution based therapy and this may require a different approach.
